How to Determine if Your Water System Needs Sanitizing
Household water systems provide ideal conditions for microbial persistence when disrupted. Pressure changes, plumbing repairs, flooding, prolonged stagnation, or well contamination can introduce bacteria that form biofilms inside pipes and fixtures.
Biofilms are structured microbial communities protected by a self-produced matrix. This structure makes bacteria more resistant to disinfectants and allows them to persist even after water appears clear. Symptoms of biofilm presence include slimy residues, recurring odors, or inconsistent water quality.
Even after water treatment, contamination can spread to household surfaces through normal use. Faucets, sinks, appliances, and drains can become secondary reservoirs.
A Water Bacteria Test or Home Sanitation Confirmation Test can help determine whether bacterial contamination from a compromised water system has spread to household contact points.
